Prayer is a significant part of Evangel's community life, even more so as we "embrace the future" while celebrating 50 years of ministry in 2009 and earnestly seek God's direction for the future. Coming out of our "embracing the future weekend" in September, 2008—in which we asked the church leadership and our small groups to consider what was needed to achieve renewal and growth—was a resounding sense of the need to trust God to lead us as we approach Him in prayer. There are three main thrusts, two new, the last re-emphasized:
- "First Watch" prayer vigil. Currently, 40 individuals have committed to pray specifically and regularly for God's direction and blessing. A weekly "Touch Point" message provides a quote on prayer, a question based on the theme of that quote, and a "cue" to help focus prayer during the following week. - "SHiNE@9" is another new prayer emphasis. It is a pre-service prayer time that meets at 9 am each Sunday in the SHiNE room on the lower level. Many people are busy with responsibilities on Sunday morning, so even if you can only spend a few minutes, stop in when you can, leave when you must. The session breaks up in time to attend the morning worship service, but if some feel led continue, the room is available.
- "First Wednesday" is a special prayer-only emphasis, usually held the first Wednesday of each month during our Adult Bible Study time (6:30pm in the Library/Fireside Side). Started several years ago, this session integrates well into out intensified prayer emphasis. See the current First Wednesday prayer guide.

Pastor Dave prepares a guide of Daily Bible Readings, with a suggested readings for each day. These are updated every two months. The daily reference is included in the Calendar.
